CUNNINGHAM, Jesse Leroy “Roy”

87, of Seffner, formerly of Seminole, passed away Sunday, March 17, 2019 in Brandon. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Hildrey, his son Michael (Wendy), son Delton (Robin), daughter Della Cobb (Eric), two granddaughters Brittany Caravona (Josh) and Kaylee, six grandsons Austin Cobb, Hunter, Zachary Cobb, Jesse Cobb, Gabriel Cobb, Jaiden Cobb and two great-grandchildren Heidi Lynne Caravona and Cooper Cunningham Caravona.  Roy was born in Alda, Nebraska on October 3, 1931 to Raymond and Emma(Holtz) Cunningham. His parents were both born to farming families in Nebraska.  His father’s family had been in the United States since colonial times while his mother was the daughter of German Immigrants.   The family moved to Texas when Roy was 4 and he grew-up in the West Texas town of San Angelo.   After graduating from San Angelo High School, he attended San Angelo Junior College until he left to serve in the Army during the Korean War.  He enlisted as a private in October 1952 and was discharged as a Sergeant in January 1954.   He would go on to enlist in the Army Reserve in May 1958 as a Staff Sergeant and eventually retire at the rank of Lt Colonel in November 1984.

After returning from Korea, he enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin where he received a Bachelor’s of Business Administration in Accounting in 1957.  His first position after college was as a cost accountant for Carnation in Houston, Texas.  He then worked for the IRS for 30 years, starting in the Houston Office, before transferring to Panama City, Florida in 1962, Ft. Myers in 1965 and finally St. Petersburg, retiring in 1988.  After retiring from the IRS, he was an accountant in private practice until 2014.

Roy was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church and served as either Church Treasurer or Deacon in the churches in which he was a member. He was a Rotarian and a member of the Korean War Veterans Association.

A Memorial Service will be held March 23, 2019 at 2 pm at Cornerstone Baptist Church, 818 N Parsons Ave, Brandon, FL 33510. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to The Cornerstone Baptist Church Student Ministry.
