Obituary for Barbara J. Bridges
Barbara J. Bridges, age 87 passed away on March 11, 2018 in Sun City FL. She was born in South Haven, MI July 16, 1930, daughter of the late Lloyd and Corlan Spencer.
Barbara grew up on the family farm, and was very active in 4-H. During her junior year in 1947 she left high school to get married, moving to Kalamazoo shortly afterward. While raising five children, she took night classes and correspondence courses so she could go to college. She was admitted to Western Michigan University in 1961 and received her degree in Elementary Education/Music in 1966. She taught mostly first and second grades from 1966 until her retirement.
Barbara was very active in her church over the years. She served as a Sunday school teacher, sang in the choir and lead the children’s choir. She remained active in various ladies auxiliaries and groups until she moved to Florida in 2010.
Barbara followed after her mother as an accomplished china painter. She enjoyed every imaginable craft and even excelled at basket weaving. She loved cooking, gardening, puzzles, music and reading. Most of all, she loved to laugh.
She was proceeded in death by her husband Robert Bridges, daughter Roberta, brother Don Spencer, and one grandchild. She is survived by her sister Dorothy Scott, her three sons Donald (Gina), Tom (Brenda), Art (Cindy), daughter Becky (Bill), nine grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
