Obituary for John Kitko

Kitko, John, 86, of Brandon, passed away October 21, 2016. Born in Cleveland, OH,  on August 21, 1930, the family soon moved to Venezuela, where his father worked for an oil company.  During WWll the family moved back to Ohio while his father served with the Navy.  After the War they moved to Winchester, MA where Jack completed high school, and then went on to college in Ohio. Upon graduation, he was commissioned into the Navy, and went on to serve in both Korea and Vietnam during hostilities there. As President of the Dana Shores Civic Assn., while stationed at the U.S. Strike Command at MacDill AFB in the late 1960’s (later to become USCENTCOM and SOCOM), he founded and led an early environmental movement, Save Our Bay.  This movement gained county-wide support as well as that of USF, in successfully bringing about elimination of numerous small, ineffective sewage disposal plants that were polluting county waterways, and in turn the Bay itself.  He later led another successful citizen effort, The Brandon Crosstown Action Committee, in preventing construction of a planned expressway through South Brandon residential neighborhoods. He was a private pilot, loved old cars, and always drove a convertible.  Jack was predeceased by his parents John and Mary Kitko and daughter Kathi. He is survived by his wife Linda, sisters Joan and Francis, sons John(Wife Linda) and Dennis(Wife Kristin), daughter Anne, and 8 grandchildren (Lisa, Rachael, John, Justin, Auriana, Kail, Wyatt, and Austyn.) A memorial service will be held at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Valrico at 6pm November 3, 2016, with visitation at 5pm and Honor Guard at 5:45pm, where he served many years as an Usher, Eucharistic Minister and in the Homebound/Nursing Home Ministry.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Stephen’s Catholic Church/Society of St. Vincent de Paul 5049 Bell Shoals Road, Valrico, FL 33596. His cremains will be scattered at sea by the Navy.
